Salve a tutti quanti,
E` sempre con sentimenti contrastanti che giungo a inviare una qualche sorta di messaggio di fine anno... non pensando nemmeno per un momento di essere in competizione col discorso della Regina, ma piuttosto chiedendomi cosa potrebbe suscitare un qualche interesse. Ovviamente io, come molte altre persone su questo meraviglioso e turbolento pianeta, ho i miei pensieri e preoccupazioni riguardo allo stato attuale delle cose, ma penso che i miei pensieri non valgano più di quelli di chiunque altro e, a questo fine, manterrò questi pensieri al minimo.
Quinlan Road ha subito alcuni cambiamenti significativi l'anno passato e altri sono ancora a venire. Come chiunque che ha o ha avuto una sua impresa può attestare, c'è molto di più nella gestione di una impresa di quello che salti all'occhio. Il fatto che siamo stati capaci di intraprendere quello che abbiamo fatto nell'ultimo decennio e oltre è da tributare a molti fattori, inclusi pensiero creativo e tenacia.
Come molti si renderanno conto, l'industria della musica è cambiata notevolmente nel corso degli ultimi 10 o anche solo cinque anni, e stiamo esaminando come possiamo evolverci al meglio mantenendo al contempo gli ingredienti più importanti, specialmente il mantenere un rapporto stretto e proteggere "coloro che hanno trovato un posto per la mia musica nelle loro vite", o CCHTUPPLMMNLV - possiamo trovare una parola migliore di "fan"? - e il mio avere più tempo per me stessa al di fuori del dirigere le attività.
L'anno nuovo ci vedrà aggressivamente avvinghiati a questa agenda, sapendo bene che la ristrutturazione del veicolo di Quinlan Road che "recapita" la musica deve essere studiata per raggiungere ed indirizzare concretamente tutti i criteri se voglio andare avanti e creare musica. Augurateci buona fortuna!
Detto questo, quest'anno è stato testimone di alcuni miei sforzi di uscire e cominciare un nuovo ciclo di CD. In primavera ho avuto la fortuna di viaggiare due volte in Grecia e Turchia nel lavoro di esplorazione di alcune piste che ho trovato interessanti. E come sempre mi sono imbattuta o sono stata introdotta a libri e periodici che gettano luce sulla ricerca avviata dalla mia curiosità.
La scuola storica che ho acquistato due anni fa che è diventata il Falstaff Family Centre sta cominciando a camminare con le sue gambe. Mi ha ricordato, però, di quando ho cominciato la mia carriera musicale in termini di curva di apprendimento e nel provvedere disposizioni su salvaguardia e sicurezza, sistemi operativi, pianificazione, affitti e così via. Abbiamo assunto un nuovo direttore in settembre che si sta prendendo cura di tutto quanto a meraviglia e, anche se ci sono ancora molte cose da fare (ad esempio un sito web), sento che in un anno circa starà realmente in piedi da solo. Una delle aree in cui ci focalizzeremo nell'anno a venire sarà quella della musicoterapia.
Il Cook-Rees Fund for Water Search and Safety sta a sua volta diventando indipendente in termini di integrazione nella comunità sulla sicurezza acquatica, non solo in Canada ma anche internazionalmente. Abbiamo avuto la fortuna di avere un eccellente comitato consultivo e anche di avere ritrovato i contatti con un mia vecchia amica, Roxanne Standefer, che ci rappresenta nel campo e che è in grado di dargli una attenzione più quotidiana.
I momenti clou di quest'anno sono stati, insieme ad altri e più privati eventi, l'avere la possibilità di passare una settimana ad Atene in seguito al successo come disco d'oro di Live In Paris And Toronto; il breve soggiorno in Turchia per unirmi ai miei amici Murat e Maisie Yagan nel festeggiare una onorificenza consegnata a Murat in un villaggio nell'Anatolia, e poi un altro breve ritorno in Turchia per visitare un sito archeologico a Gordion, un sito di viaggi celtici.
E` stato meraviglioso essere invitata ad esibirmi per Sua Maestà la Regina Elisabetta come parte delle celebrazioni per il suo giubileo a Winnipeg in ottobre; e il mese scorso mi è stata assegnata una laurea onoraria dalla Wilfred Laurier University.
Ci sono indizi su possibili esibizioni in qualche festival quest'estate. Questo, come anche il lavoro sul prossimo CD, sarà incastrato nel programma a seconda di con quanto successo e velocità riusciremo a mettere insieme tutti i pezzi a QR, ma sento ottimisticamente che possiamo affrontare tutto quello che abbiamo di fronte. Non posso dirvi quanto sono ansiosa di uscire e vedervi tutti quanti e ci sforzeremo di tenervi sempre informati (a proposito, vedete anche la nota sull'indirizzo email sul nostro sito www.quinlanroad.com)
L'oltrepassare la soglia del giorno più corto ci ricorda del potere rinvigorente di molte cose. Nel suo senso più piccolo, è un messaggio di speranza. E` la mia speranza personale che troveremo un modo di comprendere e rispettare tutte le persone e creature con cui condividiamo questo pianeta.
Possano questa stagione festiva e gli anni a venire essere di diversità, inclusione e amore.

A year-end message from Loreena McKennitt Hello everyone, It is always with mixed feelings that I come to sending some kind of year-end dispatch... not thinking for a moment I am in competition with the Queen's speech, but rather wondering what might be of interest. Of course I, along with many others on this wonderful and troubled planet, have our thoughts and concerns regarding our current state of affairs, but I feel my thoughts are no more worthy than anyone else's and to that end, will keep those thoughts to a minimum. Quinlan Road has undergone some significant changes this past year and there are still more to come. As anyone who has had his or her own business can attest, there is much more to running a business than meets the eye. The fact that we have been able to undertake what we have this past decade and more has been a tribute to many things, including resourceful thinking and tenacity. As many will realize, the music industry has changed considerably over the past 10 or even the past five years, and we are examining how we can best evolve while retaining the most important ingredients, especially keeping a close connection with and protecting "those who have found a place for my music in their lives", or TWHFAPFMMITL - can we come up with a better word than "fans?" - and me having more time for myself outside the running of activities. The New Year will see a very aggressive grappling with this agenda, knowing that the restructuring of the vehicle of QR which "delivers" the music must be designed to meet and address all matter of criteria if I am to move on to create the music. Wish us luck! Having said that, this year has seen a few efforts to get out and begin the next CD cycle. In the spring I had the good fortune to travel twice to Greece and Turkey in the effort to explore some leads I have found interesting. And as always, I come upon or am introduced to books, periodicals which throw light on my curiosity's quest. The heritage school I purchased two years ago and which has become The Falstaff Family Centre is coming into its own. It has reminded me, however, of when I started out in my musical career in terms of learning curve and setting up arrangements which run from safety and security, operating systems, scheduling, rentals and so on. We hired a new director in September who is undertaking things swimmingly and although there is still more to be set up (for example a website), I feel that in about a year it should really be coming into its own. One of the areas of focus this coming year will be that of music therapy. The Cook-Rees Fund for Water Search and Safety is also coming into its own in terms of becoming more integrated into the water safety community, not only in Canada but internationally as well. We have been blessed to have an excellent advisory board and also to have become reacquainted with an old friend of mine, Roxanne Standefer, who is representing us in the field and who is able to give it more day to day focus. The highlights of this year were, amongst other and somewhat private things, being able to spend a week in Athens as a result of Live In Paris And Toronto achieving a gold status; the brief sojourn to Turkey to join my friends Murat and Maisie Yagan in their celebrations as Murat was being honoured in an Anatolian village, and then another brief return to Turkey to visit an archaeology site at Gordion, a site of Celtic travels. It was wonderful to be invited to perform for Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth as part of her Jubilee celebrations in Winnipeg in October; and then last month I was awarded an honorary doctorate from Wilfred Laurier University. There are rumblings about going out to perform in some festivals this summer. This, as well as working on the next CD, will be impacted by how successfully and swiftly we can put the pieces into place at QR, but I feel optimistic that we can broker all that is in front of us. I cannot tell you how anxious I am to get out and see you all and we will endeavour to keep you informed (by the way, please see our e-mail address note on our website at www.quinlanroad.com) As we cross over the threshold of the shortest day, it reminds us of the rejuvenating power of many things. In the very least, it is a message of hope. It is my personal hope that we will find a way to understand and respect all the people and creatures with whom we share this planet.
